Ancient Spring feeding the very small town of Hatherleigh and still flowing at 5 – 10 litres per min. It’s quite possible that the town grew up around this abundant water source in Saxon times or earlier. There are also 2 wells just outside the town; St, John’s Well on Hatherleigh Moor and the lesser known St. Mary’s Well located in woodlands a couple of miles the other side of town.

    Hi,
We are renting a newly built house on the site of the old slaiughter house. I did not pay much attention to the spring which has a tap on the street where the water flows.
I saw a man filling water at this source.
The next day, I took a kettle of water. I boiled and drank three glasses of water.
It upset my stomach for a day.
This morning I realised at the rear of the house there is a well? that is part of the stream’s open area. It is well built and has a wired mesh. But it is not clean and not well maintained.
Any idea who is responsible for the maintenance of this spring?
I hope to send you a photo of the visible pathways of this spring.

    Thanks

    Dr Dayalan.
