Waters from this spring form a portion of the headwaters of the Sugar River which flows to the southeast and on into IL. There once was a viewing platform for users of the adjoining Military Ridge Trail, but it has been removed.
To find the spring park at the public parking lot in Riley. This is found at the NW intersection of County. Highway J and the Militery Ridge Trail. By bike or on foot follow the trail to the SE. The spring is approx 1/2 city block on the right.

So I went to the spring today, the directions are fairly accurate there is a little rock trail that goes off of the main trail to where the springs are located. However the spring is not piped off it is a natural water however it’s a small pond of water were you can see the spring water bubbling up. From what I understand this is where the sugar River begins as this pond empties into a small creek. Very nice and scenic however I was not able to harvest any Springwater from this location.

Hi all, I just wanted to let you know that this area is no longer public access. My husband and I own the land that the springs are on. Our family used to lease this space to the DNR, but when we asked them to maintain the decrepit viewing platform they removed it and ended the lease. Most people don’t realize that the public land only covers the trail – all the surrounding marsh is owned by people in the area – those property lines lie mere feet off the path.

One reason we’ve gone private for this space is that we’ve had problems with people harvesting watercress out of this waterway and otherwise causing damage to the immediate area. While we don’t mind people coming back to take a look, we appreciate if you respect this natural spring and not go into it or beyond onto our property.

We plan on making some improvements in our woodlot over the next few years that will be posted private and no trespassing. Our first sign has already been torn down once. We really want to let people see these springs, but if we find disrespect continues we’ll have no choice but to fence off the area.
