Spring percolating from gravelled slope into concrete trough. Accessed from spur as above on Mt Herbert Walkway. Take 4WD track on eastern side of spur, about 2/3 of the way up the hill. The location is at S.172 degrees 44 minutes 293 seconds and E.43 degrees 40 minutes 353 seconds.
“Near the spring is the remains of a burnt totara stump. This is the last of an awesome forest consisting of these stately trees that was destroyed by farmers in the 19th century to support a few skanky sheep for some time until the fertility was too compromised. You know… those guys who regularly proclaim they are the guardians of the land, yeah right!” – Honora Renwick

Hours Spring is Open:
Banks Peninsula is closed to lambing for 3 months from August to October inclusive. The Hon David Carter who is a landowner in Kaituna has publicly stated on his website that the track to the Packhorse is only closed for 6 weeks from August to Mid-September so the 3 month term may be inaccurate. Currently all tracks are closed due to slight damage from the Sept 4 earthquake in 2010.
